29. Above our former organ loft is our oldest window, which was amalgamated from windows in our original sanctuary. They were probably designed by Henry E. Sharp of New York City and/or Samuel West of Boston. Its lower left panels, which depict an angel and Christ the Good Shepherd, are a memorial to Elizabeth Sprague Rand (1842-1852), given by her father, founding senior warden Edward Sprague (1809-1884). “Eliza” can be seen on the left-most panel; to the right of it, her death date (22 May 1852) and inscription: Non est mortua sed dormit [she is not dead but sleeps]; and in a red cartouche, her initials. The right panels depicting Christ and Jairus’ daughter and the Good Samaritan, were given by founding member William Richards Lawrence (1812-1885) in memory of his father Amos Lawrence (1786-1852).
Its upper panels are memorials to Civil War soldiers Lieutenant Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch (1839-63) and the Gould brothers Frederick Augustus (d. 4 Feb. 1863) and Charles Walter (d. 10 Mar. 1862). Designed by his father, abolitionist and public-health pioneer Henry Ingersoll Bowditch, and given by founding member William Richards Lawrence, Nathaniel’s panels on the left show his initials. F.A. Gould’s panel depicts Christ with two children, and his brother’s, an angel and child.
