About 25 years ago we spotted a headline on the front page of the Boston Globe stating, “Historic church in Back Bay is about to close and become a concert hall”. We greeted this semi-accurate and hyperbolic announcement with great joy! It prompted us to investigate and soon to embrace Emmanuel as our church home.

Otherwise
I appreciate the opportunity to share some thoughts on my gratitude for what Emmanuel Church has been for me.
Shortly before her death in 1995, the American poet Jane Kenyon wrote a poem entitled “Otherwise”. Very ill at the time and keenly aware of her imminent passing, Kenyon names with gratitude the simple pleasures of her day, concluding each gratitude with the phrase “it might be otherwise”, until the short poem concludes with “one day, I know it will be otherwise”.

O God of the prophets, may we have the wisdom, the strength, and the courage to seek always and everywhere after truth – come when it may and cost what it will.
Every year our branch of Christianity gives us a new year, advent, a new season for longing to hear and respond to lessons of prophetic wisdom and calls for repentance writ large. This morning our collect for the day gathers us as one to beg for grace to heed the prophets’ warnings and forsake our sins, our collective sins: the sins of our communities, corporations, governments, and churches. We beg for grace because we surely cannot forsake our sins without grace. If the good news is that God’s grace is abundantly available to us, all around us, completely accessible for the asking, then what? How do we drink from the deep well of God’s grace so that we heed the prophetic warnings and forsake our sins?

- 6 Feb. The Rev. Dr. Elwood Worcester delivered a sermon entitled “A Plan Providing for the Prosperity of Emmanuel Church”. In his appeal to increase the number of pledging parishioners from 300 to 500, he expressed confidence that the congregation would respond with faithful and systematic support for the parish.
Emmanuel stands for as much as any church I know. It was built and it has been maintained by the love and sacrifices of its people. Countless blessings have come from it to us. Some of the best things of our lives have come to us here. Some of the holiest associations hover around this building. Let us then do our part…to continue these blessings to our children.
