Emmanuel Center

Purpose of the Center

The Center was formed in 2007 to be a programmatic partnership of Central Reform Temple (then Boston Jewish Spirit) and Emmanuel Church. Since then we have strived to model compassionate encounters between Judaism and Christianity that affirm the difficult challenges of history and aspire to new levels of understanding. Our two congregations are faithfully rooted in our distinct religious traditions and shared spiritual heritage. We collaborate with arts and educational groups on events that explore spiritual and ethical perspectives on our shared human experience.  The Temple’s website describes some of the Center’s activities. The Center has become active in the maintenance, restoration, and renovation of the historic buildings at 15 Newbury Street.

Programs

On April 12, 2026, commemorating the Holocaust, the Center offered an hour-long program by Who Will Remain featuring vocal and instrumental music, literary and historical texts, and an audio recording of a female partisan’s oral testimony of surviving its perils.  Creators Angelynne Hinson and Amy Lieberman sang songs and recited poetry they had curated to explore themes of life-interrupted, fear, resilience and hope, guiding the audience through the experience of those identified as “the other”. They invited the audience in our Parish Hall  to reflect on the fragility of freedom and the unyielding strength of the human spirit.  For more information, see www.whowillremain.org.

Movies to be viewed and reviewed at its monthly Zoom meetings for Movie Night are announced in This Week @ Emmanuel Church.  Its language-study groups (for Hebrew, Greek & Latin) meet weekly.  Please contact Info@emmanuelboston.org for a Zoom link. For its other activities, please see  its section of our annual report. For a list of our representatives, please see Commissions & Delegates.
